WHEN JACK-O-LANTERNS WERE SCARY

Carving scary faces into autumnal produce is an old Irish tradition, but the Celtic peoples used turnips, like the one pictured, to create their ghoulish faces. This turnip is on display at the Museum of Country Life in Castlebar, Co Mayo, as part of its permanent exhibition on Samhain and Halloween. It’s believed the tradition of carving much-easier-to-work-with pumpkins became the norm amongst Irish immigrants in America, where the pumpkin was more plentiful.
