IS THAT ROOM REALLY BLACK & WHITE?

Yes. Yes, it is. When we first began design work on NOIR, we thought, “You know what would be cool!? Getting to play a detective in the 1930s!” Then, as we began watching old HUmphrey Bogart movies for research, we thought, “You know what would be COOLER!? If you were IN an old 1930s detective movie where everything was in black and white!”

We admit to a bit of naivete when it came to the construction of such an environment, because we were thinking “it won’t be that hard- just buy gray stuff, and paint the things you can’t get in gray.” Well, guess what? Almost nothing is actually gray. Furniture… floors… concrete…gray paint… nearly all the items called “gray” actually have a LOT of blue and/or brown in them. Now, they look gray when you plop them down in the middle of your living room, surrounded by a world of colour. But, when you place them in an environment claiming colourlessness, they do not pass.

Nowhere was this more evident than in the lighting used in NOIR. We spent hundreds of hours researching, shopping, trying out various bulbs, and - again - most of the lamps claiming to be pure white were actually pretty orange.

The point to all this is: we did it. In the end, we were able to create an environment for you that is as advertised; it feels like you’ve stepped into a movie from 1935. And it’s cool! So, when you see the photos of NOIR online (other than team photos), keep in mind that’s not a black and white picture - that’s just how the room looks.
